Sony wants to extend mobile batteries “life” on 40%

The company Sony is developing a new type of mobile batteries, the capacity of which will be 40% exceed the amount of the lithium-ion counterparts, used in current smartphones and tablets. True, as reported by Nikkei Technology, if new technology will be launched on the market, This will happen not earlier 2020 year.

A key element in the new Sony batteries are based on sulfur electrode. It is well known, that lithium-sulfur batteries (Li-S) better lithium-ion in all respects: the cost of production is much lower, and capacity - twice. A significant drawback of Li-S, limiting their use in commercial devices, - fragility. They stand in times less charge-discharge cycles, than Li-ion.

However, Sony, apparently, somehow solved the problem, related to the rapid deterioration of Li-S. in addition, the company has developed another, magnesium-sulfur battery, in which lithium anode does not apply at all. Production of batteries would cost even cheaper. They are also safer, than lithium-ion counterparts, are at considerable overheating or damage may pose a risk of explosion or ignition lithium cells.
